Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. The aunt was on during the night shift as nurse, so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater in the daytime. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990 she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of a particular juror. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at the studio that was small. In 1999, she launched her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
